Congratulations to Martijn van Wagtendonk, second-place winner in the 2012 ArtPrize contest held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Nearly 2000 artists entered the open contest to compete for $560,000 in prizes determined by popular vote and a juror’s selection. Song of Lift, an interactive installation by van Wagtendonk, was awarded second prize in the popular vote and received a $75,000 award.
Martijn van Wagtendonk is an Associate Professor in the Lamar Dodd School of Art and a member of the ICE Advisory Board. His innovative research in works that blend principles of art and engineering received funding from 2007-2009 through the ICE Project Grant program supported by the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR). He will present a Willson Center Fellow lecture about Song of Lift on November 15. The exhibition will remain on display at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) in Grand Rapids until November 18.
