ROC: Teaching Entrepreneurship to Musicians and Artistry to Businesses

ROC: Teaching Entrepreneurship to Musicians and Artistry to Businesses
Thursday, April 17 at 3:30 PM
UGA Chapel

http://thinc.uga.edu/ai1ec_event/teaching-entrepreneurship-to-musicians-and-artistry-to-businesses/

Join the Road of Creativity (ROC) Ensemble as they perform a concert featuring music by Queen, Leonard Cohen, Radiohead, Charlie Daniels Band, and Mumford & Sons.

Entrepreneurship prevails as the discipline behind the ROC Ensemble’s inception. ROC is a group of classically-trained musicians that has ventured into the unfamiliar yet friendly territory of rock! Its members work as college professors and active freelance musicians, including at the University of Georgia, and have performance credits that include Carnegie Hall, the White House and Grammy Award-winning recordings.

ROC has chosen to step out of the comfortable box of classical classical music and into the rock genre for many of the same reasons that an organization may find itself moving in new directions – to diversify and grow, become more relatable to its clients and chase a higher potential as musicians and people. ROC is a consultancy that demonstrates key principles of creativity through engaging musical performances and workshops. Its workshops help organizations gain a greater sense of how to infuse the process of creativity into their daily operations. ROC brings refreshing insights into cross-training/mental agility, collaboration, communication, risk taking, metaphor, and asking the right questions.

ROC Ensemble:

Ben Robinette, soprano saxophone

Xin Gao, soprano saxophone

Connie Frigo, alto saxophone

Brian Perez, tenor saxophone

Gary Paulo, baritone saxophone

Tom Gibson, trombone

David Zerkel, tuba

Greg Hankins, piano

Paul Stevens, drums

ICE Visiting Artist: Cassie Meador

ICE Visiting Artist: Cassie Meador
Monday, April 7 at 4 PM
Miller Learning Center Room 214

“I often think that I became a dancer because I grew up in a family of scientists. My parents, a neurologist and a biology professor, encouraged me to explore my surroundings. I have learned that, like the scientific process, the creative process allows us to work at the edges of what is knowable.”

Ideas for Creative Exploration (ICE) is pleased to host Cassie Meador, a choreographer, performer, and educator who explores environmental issues through dance and community engagement.

Cassie Meador is the Artistic Director of Dance Exchange, founded by Liz Lerman in 1976 and now regarded as one the most innovative and creatively expansive dance companies in the world. Her work is imbued with a passion for her surroundings, a belief in the human capacity for change, and a conviction that art can be a potent form of research and communication.

While at UGA, Meador will talk about future collaborations and recent work, including How To Lose a Mountain, a multi-year project that began with a 500-mile walk from Washington, DC to a site of mountaintop removal in West Virginia to trace the sources of the energy that fuel her home.

Along the way, she and Dance Exchange artists visited power plants, led movement and outdoor education workshops called Moving Field Guides, and collected stories from community members in a series called 500 Miles/500 Stories. Meador and her artistic collaborators returned to the studio to build an evening-length work that premiered in 2013 and was supported by the National Performance Network and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, and raised Augusta, Georgia, Meador received her B.F.A. in dance from The Ohio State University. She joined the Dance Exchange in 2002 and assumed the role of Artistic Director in 2011.

For more information about Cassie Meador and Dance Exchange, please visit http://danceexchange.org.

Ideas for Creative Exploration (ICE) is an interdisciplinary initiative for advanced research in the arts at UGA. ICE is supported in part by the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts, Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate School.

ICE Conversation: Design Thinking
Friday, March 28 at 4 PM
ICE Office, Lamar Dodd School of Art, Room S150

How can design thinking drive empathetic and innovative collaboration? Join Gregory Wilson, University Innovation Fellow and founder of the What I.F.? Club to talk about learning across disciplines and beyond the classroom.

Developing a design thinking mindset assists students from science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) related fields in tackling the complex problems in today’s society. By developing empathy for potential users of their products and successfully collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds, students can assist in driving innovation. Out of the classroom experiences can be used to further increase skill development and interest in STEAM. Wilson will discuss several examples of informal learning experiences that can be used to engage students.

Idea Lab is a UGA student organization committed to providing an open, interdisciplinary platform for engagement in arts.

ICE-Vision: Reprise

ICE-Vision: Reprise (Joachim Trier, 2006)
Tuesday, March 25 at 6 PM
Lamar Dodd School of Art Room S150

ICE-Vision continues with Film Studies and English major Dafna Kaufman’s selections of great films that may be forgotten by the general public, but can be remembered and cherished through viewings today.

In this 2006 Norwegian drama, two friends endure the rough and trying life of becoming writers. In this debut film, Joachim Trier blends realism and authorial expressivity stunningly. Both lead actors bring passion and wit to their roles. With a great soundtrack, developed characters, and a fascinating plot, Reprise explores youth, depression, and love in a unique and lovely way.
