Reading Room: The Creative Commons, or “Commonly Creative”

The Creative Commons, or “Commonly Creative”
By Cheryl Davis

“Artists are constantly riffing and expanding upon the images and ideas that they see and hear around them. But as a general matter of copyright law, only the person who creates the work has the right to copy and/or use it. Does that mean that when you quote something written by another writer, or sample music for your score, or incorporate someone else’s artwork into your design, you’re infringing their copyright? Does it mean that no one can ever use your work without your permission? What if you find it on the Internet—isn’t that free for public use? The lawyerly answer is: ‘It depends.'”

Sustainability + Arts Grant
Deadline: November 14, 2016

http://sustainability.uga.edu/get-involved/students/sustainability_grants/

ICE and the Office of Sustainability invite you to apply for a Sustainability + Arts grant in conjunction with the 2016-2017 UGA Campus Sustainability Grants program. Special consideration will be given to projects incorporating sustainability + arts.

Drawn from the Student Green Fee, grants up to $5,000 are available to current UGA students who wish to initiate projects to advance sustainability through education, research, service, and campus operations. Successful projects will address priorities outlined in UGA’s 2020 Strategic Plan to actively conserve resources, educate the campus community, influence positive action for people and the environment, and provide useful research data to inform future campus sustainability efforts. Interdisciplinary projects designed to inspire, beautify and uplift—as well as to inform and conserve—are encouraged. Grants are awarded based on merit, positive impact, implementation feasibility, and available funding.

The Office of Sustainability coordinates, communicates, and advances sustainability initiatives at UGA in the areas of teaching, research, service and outreach, student engagement, and campus operations. For more information visit http://sustainability.uga.edu.

Reading Room: Gendered Income Inequality in the Arts

“We find that the gendered earnings gap is comparable for artists and non-artists, and that artistic careers are subject to some of the same social forces that drive disparity in other occupational realms. Yet in the arts, we do not find the wage penalty to motherhood that has been documented in virtually every other field. Broader implications for scholarship on gender and work, as well as suggestions for further research and policy, are discussed.”
