“Just twenty five years old, Brazilian cinema novo force Glauber Rochawrote and directed this impressive feature addressing socio-political problems within his country – and indeed, anywhere it may apply. It is the 1940s, during another drought in the Brazilian sertao, when ranch hand Manuel is fed up with his situation. His boss tries to cheat him of his earnings and Manuel kills him, fleeing with his wife, Rosa… and so it goes, the two running from one allegiance to another, following the words of others as they attempt to find a place in their ruthless land. Blending mysticism, religion, and popular culture in this symbolic and realistic drama.” [Kristie Hasse]

Revolutionary filmaking in the truest sense, Memories of Underdevelopment is Tomas Guitierrez Alea’s examination of life in post-Castro Cuba. The film’s protagonist, Sergio Mendoyo, is a member of the island bourgeoisie and has refused to flee the country with his friends and family after the Bay of Pigs. We get a first person view of Sergio’s detached and alienated psyche as he thinks to himself about the past and the socio-economic circumstances of his present.

ICE-Vision 10th Anniversary Edition: Sans Soleil

ICE-Vision returns for its tenth year with all new screenings selected by philosophy major Thomas Finan and special 10th anniversary edition re-screenings of favorites selected by past curators.

Chris Marker’s deeply personal essay film/pseudo-documentary is a meditation on, among many things; time, memory, society, and the individual’s place within it. Seemingly random but intensely beautiful images from far flung corners of the earth (mostly Japan and Guinea-Bissau) are paired with a singular female voice as she reads and comments upon poetic letters sent to her from a globe-trotting cameraman. It is a radically non-traditional narrative style but the end result is, truly, awe-inspiring in the fullest.
